I'd watch that fight. Three rounds, light gloves.

I'm amazed that it took this country a century after the first presidential assassination to take any decent steps toward clarifying the succession question. And I'm even more amazed that the language of both amendment and statute is still so vague that issues like these are still unresolved.

Well, to be fair, it wasn't until FDR came along that the possibility of a de facto lifetime president became a concern. Either through politics, death or philosophy no one ever seriously tried to serve more than two terms. And it's really only been the past few presidents who were young enough to remain in the public eye and politically viable post-presidency that it's become something to think about. Clinton, W. and Obama are perhaps the first three presidents to finish their terms at an age where they might consider running for something again instead of retiring.
It's one of those things that's not an issue until it's an issue, and then only if someone makes it an issue.

See also voting, elections and voting procedures. You would have thought there would have been a standard for voting after 2000. Also - does anyone think Trump wouldn't try for a third term? He'd sue and say see me in court.

And it would be thrown out of court in about 10 seconds. It's literally part of the Constitution that you cannot run for a third term. It doesn't get any clearer than that.

Minor point, but the last former president to hold another elected federal office was Grover Cleveland. He was a former president from 1889-93, then president again from 93-97.

Always think of people who went on to be something other than president and forget that one. Good catch.
I think Cleveland, Andrew Johnson and John Quincy Adams are the only three presidents to hold another federal office after being president.

He could get away with it since the Republicans control the Supreme Court.

Oh what a world in which only the rules/norms apply to Democrats and the only legitimate electoral victors are Republicans.

The honorarium money's too good on the speaking circuit for a former president to ever think about running for something else. What is it these days, a million a pop?

1940 was kind of a crisis. Also, FDR died young, only 63. As I believe I have posted before, the two most likely Presidents to win third terms, Ike and Reagan, were Republicans. Law of unintended consequences. PS: If Trump loses and tries to hold power anyway, I would regard it as my duty to take up arms against him and the Republican party. I dislike that thought intensely, but it is what I feel I would have to do.
