The main argument against Cersei winning is that it wouldn't be a true ending. Someone else would rise up to take her out, possibly from within. One assumes the showrunners want more finality than that, and I think that's more than fan service.

Agree with those who feel the writing has been sloppy and rushed. The past season and a half have been really reminiscent of the worst parts of The Walking Dead -- characters either making stupid choices to put themselves in peril or writing that doesn't seem secured in real motives for those characters.

Same. my GF and I had our usual Monday re-watch, and the coffee cup was still there.

On re-watch, BTW, I liked this episode slightly more.

Euron utilizing Aegis Baseline 10 with Standard Missile-4's is still disconcerting (I didn't even know we had an Foreign Military Sales Case with Westeros), but "improbable shots which hit home" have always been a staple of Sci-Fi and Fantasy.

I re-watched Sunday's episode last night on HBO Go using earbuds. That's the first time I've ever watch an episode that way. I was stunned at the amount of background noise I picked up - glasses clinking, animal sounds, fire cracking. I've never noticed it when watching TV. It was pretty cool. When I first started catching it, I took my earbuds out a couple of times thinking something was going on outside then realized it was on the show.

Those bolts were the equivalent of three 20s in a row in D&D, especially that last one to the throat.

Dungeon master: [Spends four weeks designing awesome campaign]
"OK guys - we're off .... Hey look - there's a dragon who you will surely be spending the next few Saturday nights hunting and trying to find a way to defeat it."

Archer: "I'm going to shoot at it with my long bow!"

Dungeon master: "It's a full grown dragon, a few hundred yards in the air. Are you sure you just don't want to wander into town and ask some questions first?"

    Archer: "Fire away!"

    DM: "Fine. Roll a D20."

    Archer: "*20*"

DM: [flips to a chart]. "Fine. Roll again."

    Archer: "*Another 20!*"

DM: [Looks annoyed] "OK. Roll again."

    Archer: "*Another 20!*"

DM: [Looking really annoyed ... flips to a chart .... flips to another chart] "GOD DAMN IT!"

Oddly enough, that scenario is very close to my one and only time playing D&D. I had to roll some insane 20 combination to shoot a dragon in the eye; I did it; then the goober in charge of the game mumbles something and says I still lost. I got up and left.
