"Ramirez noted it is not illegal for someone to own a large collection of firearms. But he said it is illegal to sell weapons from one's home without going through the extensively regulated state and federal processes.

The suspect is expected to be booked initially for unlawful transportation, giving, lending or selling an assault weapon. More local and federal charges could be added later as officers catalog and trace every weapon seized from the home."

What’s the argument for looking at them? It’s a 40-year tradition, nothing more, it has nothing to do with the constitutional requirements of being president, and it started when Richard Nixon released some to counteract claims of committing fraud.

If Trump is that big of a cheat, the IRS can accuse him of a crime or Congress can compel him, then release that information on its own if there’s some justifiable reason. Otherwise, it’s become a weird informal qualification of office from the media. The practice should end.

And to be clear, I’m not trying to defend Trump on tax returns. I am asking what the point of something is for any candidate or president. Trump releasing tax returns has been conflated with the tenuous fate of our nation’s physical security. That’s nonsense.

Maybe, but not necessarily. Was he kept afloat by Russian money prior to the election. That would be a major vulnerability. Probably not wise to welch on Putin.

    In Trump's case?

That he was a business genius "billionaire" was his one qualification for the job. His tax returns would certainly have proved otherwise.

They'd also probably reveal his debt to a bank currently under investigation for laundering billions of dollars in Russian money.

Then Congress can compel release to Congress.

We’ve created an artificial standard that basically functions as entitlement, where the press assumes something if you don’t release them.

    In any case.

IRT Trump, I don’t care about the first item, qualifications and whatnot. The qualifications are laid out in the Constitution.

The second is legitimate, and Congress can compel that.

You just cited the actual law here, the one passed after Teapot Dome that Mnuchin is flouting. And let's be real, if dozens of people answer a question about their finances and one refuses, it's just logical to assume there's something in those finances that won't bear scrutiny.
