Who overrates Oliver Stone? His releases have been greeted with disappointment, disdain and ridicule for many years now.

Which reminds me: Has there ever been a period in American history when the press was as castrated and ineffectual as it is today?

It is now noon on the East Coast and this is the only tweets he has done on Mother’s Day.

SHS will explain tomorrow that he was busy spending time with his family and felt that he wanted to give America’s Mother’s a break from his tweeting. When these posts are pointed out, she’ll say she made them as a Mother’s Day present to herself.

Run-up to the Iraq War comes to mind. They were too busy being giddy about getting to be embedded with the troops.

Maybe I should have said 'was.'

But past tense or present, Stone's work is overpraised.

    Lee's, undervalued.

Depends how you measure it. Newspapers in all but the largest markets are shadows of their former selves. But the Post, Times, WSJ have done good work on Trump. The Baltimore Sun, even though its resources were thinned by the Trumpist executions in Annapolis, which moved some from the Sun to the Capital, has exposed corruption in the Mayor’s office.

"Done good work" does not seem to me to be proven by the facts in evidence...those facts being that Trump has yet to be held accountable for absolutely anything.

The press has tried mightily to "hold Trump accountable". The press has uncovered any number of scandals that would have broken previous presidencies. Trump is utterly shameless, he shrugs away as unimportant major violations of the law and our historical norms, and the Republican party says nothing. He denies things he said when they are on videotape for all to see. His voters refuse to abandon him no matter how bad things get - evangelical Christians accepting a President banging porn stars while married comes to mind. The Republican party has utterly abdicated their role in democratic government, refusing to act in the check and balance role.

Half the population does not give a damn what the press says, because they are "enemies of the people". In addition, state controlled media reassures them countless times a day that none of this is true, that Trump is the one true president, and that all these charges are politically motivated nonsense.

There are many people who are far more to blame than the press. As with the rest of us, it has taken time for them to understand the new reality of covering this White House.

The press can only turn up information. Which it has done within its limits.

It has no subpoena power to act on that information.

A quisling Congress is the bigger problem in the age of Trump.
