Watching the Alabama statehouse battle... does anyone in that state, regardless of ethnicity, have a tolerable accent? Aside from Neutral Corner and Little Nicky, of course.

Anyone in politics is a different question. Listen to Sen. Shelby speak on the floor of the Senate and then listen to him in sound bites when he's home speaking to constituents.

The arc of our politics is moving sharply in that direction. These abortion bills are in part desperation - a way of holding on to a cause that has gained in intensity but lost power in numbers.

It's going to be a liberal, populist America in 10-15 years. Not sure any of us will like it much, but it will be.

 

A big part of the problem is that we've also lost the sane Right. There is no one to negotiate with. Compromise is a dirty word. The Trump/Ryan tax cut combined with the budget bills passed and signed are causing more damage more effectively than the Dems.

There is no counterbalance.

 

You keep saying this, and you might be right, but right now it's looking like some seriously regressive shit is going to happen first. You might not like some aspects of progressive politics—I don't like how it eats itself most of all—but I would imagine anything is better than living in the Republic of Gilead. Bunch of scared old white men being scared, old, white, and men.
