According to Alma's hypothetical, we can save the planet (climate change), save the sick (medicare for all), balance the budget (by taxing the shit out of the wealthy) . . . and it would still be "selling out". Because you gave up something.

The number of people benefiting from the trade would be magnitudes more than would be harmed . . . but can't do it. It's selling out.

If you're a sexist, it's quite easy to write off taking away a woman's right to choose what happens to her own body as just the price of doing business, as a compromise. Hey, it's only a little more than half of the population. Why should they matter, right?

I want to compromise on defense spending.

No matter what compromise someone comes up with, they're branded as anti-this or anti-that. It's the only tool you've got.
