I don't think the Mets had any choice but to side with the reporter on this one.

The Mets don't care that Mickey Callaway blew his top at a reporter as much as his 37-41 record. Apologize in public and ignore it is standard procedure. If that was the case, Billy Martin would have never worked again. And Vargas threatening to punch somebody out? His career K/9 is 6.2. He'd miss you four out of 10 times.

Oh, for the days of Billy Martin beating the crap out of Dave Boswell at the Lindell AC

Something about Cy Young winners in Detroit: Denny McLain dumped ice water on Watson Spoelstra. Willie Hernandez did the same thing to Mitch Albom. One of the two probably deserved it.

The GM told the manager what to do? Where was the GM?

Or the days of Billy Martin beating the crap out of a marshmallow salesman.

Or the days of Billy Martin getting traded out of New York for getting involved in a fistfight with The Mick at the Copa.

In all seriousness, though, Billy Martin belongs in Cooperstown. He was a helluva manager.

I’d agree with this. Won division titles with four different teams and got the Rangers into contention when no one thought they could win 70 games.

No disrespect to Joe Torre or Bobby Cox, but he was every bit the manager that they were. Probably not on par with LaRussa, but he's in that discussion. Besides, LaRussa was in the vanguard in defending the election of Harold Baines, so whatever he supposedly knows about baseball is now suspect.

Or the days of a drainage culvert beating the crap out of Billy Martin.
