Cardinals beat Astros on Goldschmidt’s three-run homer and take over sole possession of first in the NL Central. That’s six straight victories for the Cards and five straight games with a homer for Goldy.

This race is going to go down to the wire.

I heard a thing the other day along the same lines. Right now pitchers are rating themselves on velo rather than other measures like how effectively they get people out. The argument was batters are taking advantage by going for launch angle against high 4-seamers. At some point pitchers are going to adjust by throwing down in the zone more with more sink and the homers will drop. That will force hitters to go for contact.

Maybe that start rendering these infernal shift ineffective as well.

First Phil Collins in trouble, now Mike and Ike? This could go down as one of this board's greatest days.

Meanwhile, this could be the fan catch of the year.

That doesn’t make much sense. The reason the high fastball has become so effective is because hitters are trying to increase their launch angle, i.e., get under the ball more. Their swing plane is now lower in the zone.

If pitchers start working down in the zone again, they’ll be playing into the hitters’ power zone.

It made sense to me in the moment but I see your point here. I think overall there's got to be an adjustment coming.

Yankee starting pitchers have given up 50 earned runs this week. That's bad, right?
