What has their experience been? In the mostly Latin American countries I lived in for many years, free or almost-free college wound up being disguised unemployment for lots of middle-class kids whose degrees didn't prepare them for much, but whose years studying kept them out of the job market and reduced the amount of competition for jobs, at taxpayer expense, of course.

Almost any topic regarding economics is challenging for me to understand at best. But at the very least I don't see why 2 year public JC/Community colleges can't be tuition free. They are already a good value relatively speaking and they are a wonderful pathway to a four year degree if that is what one wants. I absolutely don't buy that this would lessen the quality or legitimacy of a degree. Hell, if my graduating from UW-Madison 33 years ago hasn't sullied other's UW diploma I doubt that a deserving student graduating thanks to "free tuition" will change anything.

Here's a place where we agree. Federally guaranteed loan money is like chum to a shark. The grifters all crowd around to get their (paid for by someone else) share. Look no further than Betsy DeVoss and her investments in student loan collection firms. Money farm "Colleges" produce worthless degrees and leave the students on the hook when the job market looks at their diploma with clear eyes and says "Ummm, no, I don't think so."

Salaries have inflated a great deal, and most schools could sack about a third of their mid-to-upper level management and not miss a beat.

Perfectly possible to make an argument against federal loan guarantees - and still make an argument for "free" college.

The newspaper barons, spending half their year in St Tropez, see nothing wrong with giving away free content.
I hope I live long enough to see major college football defunded - that's linear progress I can get behind.

Guess what doesn't get covered if someone files for bankruptcy protection.....

    Federal student loans.
The courts will tell a bank, auto maker, or credit card company you are too broke to pay, but Uncle Sam says, "Fuck you. Pay me."

I think everyone understands that it's not free. What's wrong with people's taxes being used to benefit the people?

Is an aircraft carrier a free boat?
