Question about Pro Bowls - does a player get the same "credit" for being named a replacement as they do if they were voted in as a starter but couldn't play?

....which is the closest he's been to a book since 6th grade," says Paul Finebaum.

Somebody has to bring it up every time a team needs a quarterback, right? Maybe the AP reporter drew the short straw because no coach seems interested in having that discussion.

Mike Tomlin got the question at his Tuesday press conference. He seemed pissed, but dismissed it fairly quickly. He started his press conference explaining the Steelers' moves upon losing Roethlisberger, including moving rookie free agent Devlin Hodges up from the practice squad and signing Paxton Lynch to replace him on said practice squad. Hodges spent all of training camp with the team and gave Dobbs a run for a roster spot before being cut. Of course, the Steelers are royally screwed if Mason Rudolph goes down. There is a pretty good chance they are screwed even with Rudolph, but I certainly don't trust Hodges.

Anyway, when Tomlin got the question about Kaepernick, he reminded the assembled media that he had already explained the Steelers' process after losing Roethlisberger and said that he would not be commenting on any player who is currently a free agent. This from a guy who gave Michael Vick one last shot in 2015, which was a disaster. It is interesting that Vick kept getting opportunities after serving time in jail, but nobody will touch Kaepernick. That said, the latter hasn't played since 2016. How good could he possibly be after all that time away?

True. But, in the Panthers' case, Eric Reid is already in the room and will speak up for Kaepernick. And good.

Thing is, especially in the Panthers' case - and this was the case before Cam Newton's injuries started piling up - it made sense to give Kaepernick a shot. A quarterback who could make a defense worry about both his throwing arm and legs. Again, this way Norv Turner wouldn't have to drastically change the look of the offense. Newton is more straight ahead and tougher to bring down, while Kaepernick is more elusive and a little faster. Point is, they're more similar than a classic pocket passer and a dual-threat quarterback.

Plus if they're willing to sign Eric Reid, then re-sign him and let him do as he wishes during the pregame anthem, etc., then you're a little less concerned about what others think than some of the other owners who seemingly have it in their heads that Kaepernick will never be welcome because of his social stance.

And ... one look at Kyle Allen and Will Grier during the exhibition season and you would have thought the same thing. "Horror show" is being too kind.

I did see Allen and Grier, though I can't say I was paying close attention. I watched part of the final preseason game because they were playing the Steelers. I agree that it would make more sense for the Panthers than the Steelers due to the system and the quality of the backups. The Steelers seem to believe in Rudolph and he certainly showed poise and accuracy last week. "Duck" Devlin looked like he had a little something, too. On the other hand, Newton is going to play again this season and Roethlisberger won't.

I do see your point. I just wonder if Kaepernick can be ready to play soon enough to be useful before Newton returns.

That's certainly not an unreasonable question, but at the same time teams keep bringing in guys who have been out of the league as long or longer. Hell, Teddy Bridgewater has done virtually nothing since 2015.

Oddly, Rivers only faced the Steelers once in the playoffs. It was a loss, though.
Three of his playoff losses came against the Pats, two of them in Foxborough and one when he played with a torn ACL.
He also beat Peyton Manning and the Colts a couple of times.

Trade Wilson for the best kicker, or punter.

You always give this obtuse response. I guess you would rather have Matty H or Dave K leading your guys down the field or don’t care since the QB position doesn’t matter that much.
