I can’t see why they’d lie to inflate attendance if higher attendance requires higher rental payments. If they under report the government has a theoretical fiduciary duty to the taxpayers

If you like to eat and especially drink a lot at a game, the all-inclusive ticket is the way to go. I've had Bank of America and Cardinals Club tickets, and even when they're $125 or so (less for midweek games), you come out ahead. The seats are great, they have a full spread and they'll take your beer or wine order and bring it to you.

I went to a midweek game last year with the wife's cousin and one of his friends. Tickets were, I think, $75. We probably had 7+ beers each and ate our fill from the buffet. Try doing that in a regular seat, and you're easily looking at twice what we paid.

In some leases the stadium authority actually pays the franchise an additional fee per person for official attendance.

In stadium tenancy agreements, the term "rent" is a misnomer-- in many cases, the sports franchise pays nothing to the stadium authority; in fact they get supplemental payments.

So not only do they get their stadium built for free by the taxpayers, then get to keep all revenues from all activities in the stadium, then they also get additional payments for playing there.

There is some reason these clubs are lying about this shit.

Or, there are 7,000-10,000 people in Orange County who like buying tickets every night.... then not go.

Maybe the team buys the tickets for the purpose of putting them on the secondary market? Or is that illegal ?

With three games to go, 14 teams are behind their "attendance" numbers from last season -- three of them are playoff teams (Yankees, Astros, Nats) and another is in the wild card hunt (Indians).

Texas will end up being up. In addition to the fact that they close their ballpark, the Yankes are in town.

Outside of 8-10 games a year (Dodgers/Yanks/Sawx), there is no secondary market.

Chevrolet selling a car to itself isn't a sale, in accounting terms.

With the secondary market, the team can sell a ticket priced at $20 for $7 on StubHub and still get a butt in the seat.

Outside of the 10 premium games, no butt is in the seat.
Night in, night out, they announce attendance at 36,000. Last night in the stands, it looked like an ebola announcement had been issued.

I don't believe StubHub, the "authorized resale agent of MLB,"
sells tickets below original list price.

    Many other resale sources do.

Although not for minor league games. I've searched the seven seas and haven't found any site selling minor league tickets under list price.

Yes. They do. Every game. Which is how I'm able to go to PNC Park for half off, if not more. I made the mistake of buying tickets from the club the first year I lived here. Haven't paid close to full price since. This year, I went to 8 or 9 games without paying anything thanks to a family member dating one of the Pirates.

Ok, well, the Tigers, whose attendance is like 4th worst in the majors, have had no below-list price tickets on StubHub, although they're usually easy enough to find on other sites.

The team has run quite a few discount dates this season, which has sent their ticket package holders into a rage: "why did we buy these tickets at full freight in April if you were going to run BOGO specials in August?"
