Polls by both Quinnipac and CNN today show even-money support for impeachment AND removal.

Once that tips over the top, the Republicans will be looking to pull the ejection handle.

"Another perfect call! The Do Nothing Savage Democrats think talking to the leader of Australia is a sin! We talked about Crocodile Dundee ... I love that movie ... it's true. Paul Hogan was very nice to me many years ago. ... Kang-A-Roos everywhere there. They call it 'Down Under,' I guess because it's on the other side of the planet ... which might be flat! Many people say it is flat. Some say it isn't. I don't know. But many people are talking about it."

That or a fake stroke or heart attack, followed by a remarkable recovery.

Curious what the impeachment polling is in Arizona, NC, Colorado, Georgia and Maine - I really won't bother with Alabama (though Doug Jones' stay in the Senate is perilous enough for the Ds). Senate is R plus 3 right now. One of Georgia's seats won't have an incumbent.

Surprising that he would answer the question and declare that he'd have to do it. And perhaps telling.
The truth is that the Senate doesn't have to take it up. McConnell's statement suggests there may be some defectors in his klan.

The question presented in some form would be whether, under the relevant rules, the Senate is required to hold an impeachment “trial” fully consistent with current rules—or even any trial at all. A chair’s ruling in the affirmative would be subject to being overturned by a majority, not two-thirds, vote.

(Note: The blog post doesn't specifically state if a no-trial determination can be overruled or what happens if there is a no-trial determination.)

A motion to dismiss the case can be brought to the floor of the Senate before the trial begins. Simple majority passes it. One such motion was made before start of Clinton trial. It's not quite "not taking it up," close, but not quite same.

Uninspiring sounds pretty good right about now.
