Believe me -- I understand how the morning vs. evening thing works. Not suggesting that they weren't giving Gayle King a greater role. I'm saying you don't move someone to the Evening News anchor role -- symbolically the face of the news division -- because you want to boost someone else's role in the morning. If you simple want to boost Gayle's role, you tell Norah to shut up and move over a chair.

 

Fair enough - but I think that they added two new male co-anchors says a lot. Instead of Charlie Rose and two female co-anchors, it's King and two males. Having O'Donnell take the evening gig also helps the transition, particularly that they gave her the managing editor title which hadn't been given to an anchor since Pelley and they moved the show to DC.

 

Safe to assume Smith has a non-compete.

So if he did quit - as opposed to being pushed out with some sort of negotiated settlement - we won't likely see him anywhere for a while.

And I think the most relevant comparison is Megyn Kelly. A star at Fox, but nowhere else. He's a risky, expensive hire.

The problem for Smith is that a straight-shooting reporter was a high-paid (15 mill a year) anomaly and hence a brand at Fox. At another network, he's just another guy.
