A longer than usual post because this is a story. This morning the US slapped $7.5 billion worth of tariffs on EU products as part of the endless Airbus-Boeing war. Among the tariffs was a 25 percent one on French wine. This has caused considerable consternation in the wine industry there, and my daughter, whose job is selling fancy Bordeaux to the US, is kind of ground zero for the issue. She has noted that French exports not subject to the tariff included Champagne, cognac, and leather goods, the chief products of luxuries firm LVMH, one of France's biggest companies. She had a conspiracy theory (she's getting more French by the day) that LVMH reached Trump to get the exemption. Well, it used to be a theory until the Times had a picture of Trump visiting an LVMH store for some ribbon cutting. Given what we know, is there any doubt the company just straight up bribed the President of the United States?

Wait. I heard Trump was losing hundreds of millions of dollars by being president. Is that not true?

Under Senate rules any one senator can try to set up a vote on a bill. But because that requires unanimous consent, any one senator can block it.

Didn't realize that. That's fucking stupid. So if you know you're gonna vote against a bill, you can block it from even being voted on? Am I missing something? Or is only with resolutions which have no binding power?
