Think of it this way. By dumping two future Hall of Famers, the Tigers have put themselves in position to get high draft picks that they can then use to potentially acquire a couple of future Hall of Famers.

How’d it work out for the Astros?

Little bit different situation. The Astros weren't really contenders when they tanked. They were looking at a total rebuild anyway, so why not crank it to 11 and bottom out?
The Tigers were closer to contending for at least a playoff spot in what is generally a weak division when they sold off generational talents.

That was around 20 years or so ago. Liza complained about it, so the Yankees said, “Fine, Liza, we won’t play your song at all.”

MLB Proposal Would Eliminate 42 Minor League Baseball Teams

MLB has offered a proposal that, if adopted, would reduce Minor League Baseball from 160 teams—not counting the complex league teams that are wholly MLB-owned—to 120 beginning in 2021.

The proposal is described as a preliminary offering subject to alteration. But if the proposal, or some version of it, is adopted, it will lead to the most dramatic restructuring of the minor leagues in more than half a century. Under the proposal, not only would more than 25 percent of MiLB teams be eliminated, but the remaining leagues would also be dramatically reworked with some leagues getting much smaller, others getting bigger, and teams switching classification levels all around the country.

It looks like a plan to increase pay without increasing payroll. Minor leaguers get more money, there are just fewer of them.

There’s so much involved that makes it a mess. The article points out some of it. Cities put up money to build and/or refurbish stadiums with the idea that they’re going to have a minor league team. Now, they won’t. The idea that college wood bat leagues will replace them is weak. Cities are going to want returns on their investment. Multiple lawsuits will occur.

Plus the switching of levels is nuts. Fans who have Triple-A franchises are used to that level of ball. Now they’re being told to accept Class A players. Would a Triple-A city want to support a Class A team? And likewise, will a Class A town be able to support Triple A baseball?

And let’s not get into the Dream League. Part of the lure of minor league baseball is selling fans on the idea (long odds aside) that the kids they’re seeing now will be in the majors in a few years. Now the fans will be told that they’re seeing a bunch of free agents, with no affiliation. Teams will also lose a season developing their prospects if the draft is in August.

As it was also pointed out, think the Yankees are going to want to give up 100+ players?

This may be the dumbest idea since making home field advantage for the World Series dependent on the All-Star Game winner.
