If they really wanted to protect the quarterback, they would go back to pre-1980 passing rules and encourage teams to run more. In 1977 Joe Ferguson led the league with 457 attempts 32.6 per game , Bert Jones was second with 393 (28 per game)

Last year - Rothlisberger led with 675 (42.2) and Luck had 639 (40) and 11 other QBs threw more than Ferguson did per game in 1977.

Three rule changes would be sufficient.

    1. Eliminate the holding rule between the hashmarks on rushing plays.
    2. Require at least two players to line up no closer to the line of scrimmage than the quarterback at the time of the snap.
    3. Make pass interference a 10-yard penalty instead of spot of the foul.

I have no idea what you mean about No. 2 and I've been to hundreds of NFL gamers.

Oh yeah - you really want to protect QBs, eliminate the slide rule. Sounds counter-productive - but QBs just won't run in the middle of the field any more. When a QB is running in the middle of the field, they can get hit from 360 degrees - when they're heading out of bounds, you cut that down to 180 degrees

I think he is talking about keeping two RBs in the backfield for pass protection.

Or alternately, teams can’t go five wide with an empty backfield anymore.

With the Bucs off, it’s a NFC North Sunday for me. Vikings-Lions and Bears-Saints on Fox and Packers-Raiders on CBS

Given the media landscape, is it even more irritating that a scumbag like Dan Shaughnessy still has a gig while a lot of other quality journalists do not? Especially after posting verbal sewage like this?

What on earth is wrong with the 49ers offense today?
