For some, I suppose you're right. For many others, it certainly helps guide them to being better people than they would be without religion (and that goes for Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, etc).

Colloquially, sure. I say people are “good folks” at times.

Cosmically? You already know the answer. Romans 3 does, too.

If we’re talking religion, why sugarcoat that thing? Part of what keeps me focused on growing me in faith is that I *can’t* earn it by being good.

earliest complete version of Romans is some 300 yards after the death of Jesus. Obviously not in a English. The Bible is a fabrication made generations after those identified in the texts had died. And subsequently translated with political motivations in the translations. In referring to a previous post and the book of Job. Christian intentionally misinterpreted the Satan character. The word used sounds like Satan in Hebrew but meant ‘accuser’. Additionally when god first appears the Christians say he is surrounded by angels. But this is another intentional misinterpretation. The text actually translates to the sons of god.

Appreciate all this. Of course, when a Christian is talking to a Christian, we feel differently about the scripture. Or at least we should. Why call ourselves Christians otherwise?

go-ahead and make it up as you go along. Change the meaning to justify the results or the actions. You have the guns so you make the rules

I don't know what your idea of "a real Christian" is, but I feel sorry for anyone who has never met one.

Really, there are lots of them around, in all walks of life. And some of them may not even "identify" as such.

It's a reference to the 80s bestseller, 'When Bad Things Happen to Good People,' by the rabbi Harold Kushner.

Worth remembering on this thread from time to time that Christianity is only one of many approaches to the divine.

No question. Come one religion, come all.

Of course, the person who's posted quite a bit about Christianity despises it.

And then there were a couple pages about how much religion sucks and unworthy of conversation it is in comparison to science.

It'll probably take another 10 pages or so before we work through all the angst, hated and bitterness and actually talk about the thing. And when we do, I already know Christianity will get slapped around in comparison to every other religion. I expect that.
