Baseball is starting to resemble tennis. That's not good.

I'm irrationally annoyed about the idea that Kevin Long "guaranteed" Soto would hit a high fastball off Cole for a home run. Verducci said it during the broadcast ... after Soto homered. And he even said, "Now I can say it ..."

My guess is that Long said it to Verducci, but asked him not to say it before the game because he didn't want to provide any bulletin board material for Cole and the Astros. I just don't see any luster to a guarantee that only gets made public after it happens, certainly not enough to include it in a headline. This story appropriately places the mention pretty low, but the headline ā€” "After guarantee, Soto homers off Cole" ā€” is asinine.

Helluva game by Soto, though. Kid is an absolute stud.

I work early. I made it until the empty netter in the Caps game made it 5-2 but couldn't commit to the end of the baseball game. We can bitch all we want about that start time, but we know it's never going to change.

I'm not sure generally speaking, but they did flash the lights after Springer's home run. Yankee Stadium does the same thing. It may be fun inside the stadium, but it looks awful on TV.

I've been on Eastern time the last nine days, instead of my customary Pacific time. How anyone who watches sports can stay up so late is beyond me. By the fifth inning last night (10 p.m. at least), I was toast. And I didn't enjoy having to wait until noon to watch college football.

Definitely a trend that should die on the vine. Considering how much they try to optimize games for broadcast in all sports, I'd hope the NFL and MLB commissioners would put a stop to it sooner than later.

Cubs get their man. Iā€™m thinking the job may be too big for him with no managing experience and a bunch of buddies on the roster.
