While Trump was not the choice of the GOP of 25 years ago or 10 years ago, he was their choice in 2016. The days of smoke-filled back rooms are over. The nominee was chosen by the voters of the various states by primary or caucus. And that's what matters.
He has conveniently fallen into line with GOP values, including but not limited to tax cuts for those who don't need them; demonizing of women and racial minorities; restricting abortion rights; clamping down on the right to vote; dismantling of the fedruhl government; elevating of states' rights; the willful choice of corporate greed at the expense of the environment; science denial and its country cousin, the contempt of all knowledge and education; and theocracy with one particular flavor of one religion as the unofficial but de facto state religion.

 

This is rhetorical, right?

 

Because the Trumpists want the optics of being led off in handcuffs. That allows them to play the victim card.
