To me, this is much more like the capture of Saddam than the killing of Bin Laden. This dude was an already defeated leader in hiding (seriously wounded to boot) whose ability to influence events on the ground was limited with mucho enemies besides us looking to get him. Bin Laden was a fugitive still acting as a leader (that's how we got him) of an organization. while obviously under the protection of Pakistani's security services. All three were totemic not substantive events. Totems count in war, but this chap is a relatively small scalp.

 

People may say that this is awfully convenient timing - but really, would there have been a moment in this Presidency where it wouldn't have appeared to some like this was being managed to distract from a scandal? Bagdhadi was scum - more a warlord than some wannabee bin Laden.

In the crassest political terms, there's little evidence this event will change much. Obama's approval ratings increased for all of one month after Bin Laden was killed before returning to their former levels. And of course the biggest example, GHW Bush had a 91 percent approval rating at the conclusion of the Persian Gulf War and 19 months later got 38 percent of the vote.

 

Bush41 had a 29 percent approval rating on 10/13/92 and a 53 percent approval rating on 01/11/93.

Must have made a hell of a concession speech.
