    That's because McCarver sucked.

I grew up watching McCarver on WOR and he was even more insufferable back then.
Especially with terrible jokes, which to me there's nothing worse on a broadcast.
Buck has this mistaken notion that he's hip/cool - that is half the man's problem.

I don't mind Buck. He's a perfectly vanilla national broadcaster. McCarver and Joe Morgan might be my least favorite broadcasters of my lifetime. Nothing but cliches, bad jokes and, often, incorrect analysis. Can't think of anything they actually brought to a broadcast. McCarver was worse than Morgan, but they were both terrible.

The flip side of Morgan going off the air was losing Jon Miller as a national PxP man. I love Jon Miller.

Jon Miller is one of the if not plain the very best.

One of the great spoils of living in the Bay Area is to have Jon Miller broadcasting Giants games.

It is interesting to ponder, fans of teams generally will go a full season with PbP guys who do nothing but their team's games. They know the squads, they understand team dynamics and the general storylines of what is going on that season. That and either overtly or subtly they're homers. When we get guys like Joe Buck et al who don't a) follow the team for the full 162 and b) don't have the home-town spin, it is jarring. Now in some cases, they are objectively terrible. But I think it is that switch that results in the yearly rendering of garments and gnashing of teeth that Buck gets.

I am going to be that guy. I was never a fan of Jon Miller. Didn't hate him, but found him too..... whimsical. Not my cup of tea at all.
It didn't help that he was paired with the most gawdawful color guy known to man, Joe Morgan. Joe could suck the life and fun out of any game.

The national guys want story lines, they don't who wins. So they get excited for an Astros rally and Nats fans call them biased then they opine about a possible Nats comeback and Astros fans call them biased. It's a no-win situation.

That said, I loved it in the 70s when they would bring the hometown broadcasters into the national booth for a couple innings each Series game. It was my introduction to Marty Brennaman and others.

Grienke in Gm 7 if necessary. He’s been getting hit in PS. Miss when ace went 1,4,7.

Yeah, I'll never forget but I was thinking starting (but I'm sure you knew what I was talking about).

I get the MLB TV package every year and, if there are no particular games that interest me, I'll watch a Giants game for Miller or an Orioles game for Gary Thorne (though I liked him much better announcing NHL games). They're the only two broadcasters I can think of who I specifically tune in to listen to, regardless of how bad the teams are. I used to watch some Dodgers games for Scully, as well.

Heard a podcast today in which a guest said this World Series may feature the best combined pitching staffs ever.
That struck me as potentially hyperbolic, but I looked.
I'm voting for 1996 with the Braves triumvirate of Smoltz, Maddux and Glavine vs. NYY club featuring Andy Pettitte, an older Doc Gooden, David Cone, Kenny Rogers and Jimmy Key. This was the middle of the steroid craze, so the Yankees' team ERA was 4.65 and many of the starters were past their prime. But if you consider lifetime achievement and the middle reliever named Mariano Rivera, that's a pretty good group.
