And then there's guys like AJ Daulerio. It's not exaggerating to say he literally fucked over the lives of dozens of writers and editors by subjecting Gawker to that lawsuit. And Magary calling the verdict bullshit -- as the only thing he said about it in the farewell essay -- is craven bullshit.

They had a new EIC picked and s/he's since reconsidered. They're gonna have to rebuild from scratch, and they're gonna have a lot of people rooting against them—imagine the comments—which is kind of fun, but also kind of daunting.

For sure. Like I said yesterday, I don't know how someone hasn't kicked the shit out of him. He's the opposite of King Midas. The hedge-fund bros who bought the place might be scum, but he opened the door for them in such a dumb way. Imagine being Nick Denton? You build this thing, and then you end up exiled to Switzerland or wherever because the fucknut you put in charge decided to stick out his tongue at Hulk fucking Hogan. I mean, it couldn't happen to a better group of people, but still. What a self-inflicted wound.

Someone will eventually take the job but I don't envy that person. You know you're going to be getting bitter, childish attacks from the Laura Wagners of the world no matter what you do. Unless they start throwing around money to grab some established names, it's hard for me to see Zombie Deadspin succeeding.

So to succeed, these business geniuses will have to spend much more money than they would have just letting the setup run itself with no guarantee of return. And I sincerely doubt any "established names" would be willing to step into this mess. How could you trust their promises?

I'd love to be the EIC and to have full power to hire the crew.

I have no problem with the edict.

I also know I can find the talent to revolve around that edict.

It's really not that hard to do what they asked Barry and his crew to do.

Songbird, you're missing the point of the whole story. The owners don't want the EIC or any other employee to have power like that. This isn't about money. It's about the need for control.

If the Laura Wagners of the world strike fear in your heart, you got much bigger problems. Magary was the only irreplaceable talent there.
