They said to do THIS within THIS parameter.

It can be done and be done at a high level.

    I can assemble that team.

If a company knowingly violates a crucial piece of the contract, you lean into the union and get back the editorial independence. Deadspinners treated it like a “eat shit or die” binary choice.

It speaks to the “fuck it, I’ll catch on over here” confidence they all have. And I am saying they’re right to be confident. Progressive media operations will want to hire martyrs after their “incredibly brave” act of self-immolation because compromise, or even a prolonged fight to win back what had been negotiated, was unacceptable.

Correct. They wanted the progressive aspect of the outlet killed and they guessed correctly the employees would choose mass sacrifice.

This is a rounding error for the private equity firm and, in the most perverse way, a pelt on the wall. It’s sad stuff all around.

Shoemaker, stick to your last. Financier, stick to making money.

    Songbird resume to Deadspin bosses

    • Years as a professional: 30
    • Publications: Many more than Laura Wagner
    • Skills & Qualifications: I coached 12- and 13-year-old girls to the softball title 2 years after we lost every game by 25 runs ... anything else in life is cake.

This part is all correct. At the same time, private equity people don't waste time on stuff they don't expect to make money on. Their Deadspin investment is going to be a big fat zero, and that isn't going to look good for someone in the firm.

We’ll see. They can probably reconstitute it but it’ll take some souls willing to be uncool. That’s just about the worst thing an East Coast journalist can be, is not cool.

It will be interesting to see if that proves true.

It's not impossible that G/O can create a successful content factory under the Deadspin name. It's as much about the business model as anything.

    People have short memories.

There's an interesting question -- if Deadspin keeps going, do you turn off the comments entirely? It won't be pretty down there.

Maybe. But so much of the traffic was generated by people in the comments talking to each other.
