It's all part of this same derangement syndrome we've been talking about on this thread. These guys fed into each other the belief that they were exceptional, like they were The Only Honest Writers on Earth. It really does have the qualities of a cult.

When people talk about places like The Awl or Deadspin failing, it has to be said that they wrote a lot of fucking weird, narrow-appealing shit. You can survive as a niche publication, but that niche can't be "my precious friends who still live in Brooklyn even though they complain all the time about how much it's changed."

    Songbird-
You're right. Fulcher was a stud safety, anyone following football at that time knew it.
But I do see quite a bit of this in writing today - nobody talks about Player X now so that means he wasn't valued/respected in his era.
It's a horsecrap fallacy and a good line editor would get rid of it.

Not to mention Fulcher was a 3-time Pro Bowler, 1-time All Pro, and played on the Bengals 1988 Super Bowl team. He had 3 career INTs in 6 career playoff games. He was a 6-3 free safety, which I believe was something of an anomaly back then.

In short, that article you posted is garbage :)

EDIT: And here's his highlight reel from that Super Bowl, which included sacking Montana and throwing a passing shoulder so hard into Roger Craig that he fumbled and the Bengals recovered. The guy was a violent tackler, more than most. Just assaulted people.

    Viva la Fulcher!

Perhaps it's a function of where I am in my life, but this Scocca piece from last year hit me like a ton of brick: Your Real Biological Clock Is You’re Going to Die

Read the first few graphs and now I'm depressed.

I'm 46 and lately I've been saying to my contemporaries, "Ya know, we're as close to 76 as we are to 16."

    They love that.

I had the Baseball Theory of Life. When I came up with it, the average life expectancy was 72, give or take. Let's use 81, so it's less depressing.

81 divided by nine innings is 9 years an inning.

    I'm 45.

I'm in the bottom of the fifth, two away, two strikes.

That puts a rocket up me, usually. Or it makes me go lie under a blanket. Depends on the day, really.

Now I understand why Scocca seems so unhappy- he's not enjoying the ride.

I am half-surprised one of these Deadspin writers hasn't staged a hunger strike.

Read the main thrust of it. Meh. Read like he got stoned and went floating in his head.

In my 40 years of watching the NFL, 2 safeties stand out, Lott and Fulcher.

I was on the sideline the game Bo's career ended (to run film back) and Fulcher was a massive specimen.

Watching this video takes you right back to those days.

^^ I agree with that. I love safeties, and if you have a Rolls Royce of one you're going to have a pretty damn good team.
