It's funny if you go to Google News. Four out of five headlines talk about how bad yesterday was for Trump and the GOP. Fox proclaims yesterday's witnesses cleared everyone.

I remember very well the House floor speeches before the Clinton impeachment vote. Rep. Alcee Hastings (D-Fla.) stole the show by opening, "Well, when I was impeached..."

I hate how this stuff is treated like a sporting event or a tribal fight, rather than people just thinking independently about what went on with Trump and his cronies, and then deciding whether or not it amounts to corruption that we all should be horrified by.

But the thing about yesterday is that the two afternoon witnesses were the least damning called so far, in that Volcker seems like he knows he got caught up with some bad stuff and he is trying to spin it to claim he didn't realize what was going on, in order to push culpability away from himself. ... and Morrison is a career intelligence technocrat who seems to have calculated the best way to take a bad situation and try to cover his ass as best he could, to piss off the fewest people and hopefully not have to retire at the age of 40 against his will.

In the shifting Nunes / Jim Jordan flailing, they made these two "your witnesses". ... but a week or two ago, they were actually on the list the Republicans asked the committe to call, because they thought their reticence could be used as a smokescreen to make it seem like their testimony was exculpatory. Neither did say, "Yes, I thought Trump was corruptly trying to use US foreign aid to try to force political investigations," but by playing it down the middle, they also didn't exonerate Trump by simply playing dumb about understanding what was going on.

In that regard, it was a bad day for the Republican bullshit, because with each witness one of their tactics gets made moot, and if these two were the closest thing they had to exculpatory witnesses, they obviously don't have the facts on their side. That can ONLY leave, "Yes, he did all the things all these witnesses have laid out. ... but what's the big deal?"

Unfortunately, as a country, we have lost our way enough where that is even a question in the court of public opinion.

More than one House Republican is already on the record with "Even if he did it, I don't care." It's tough to have a functioning democracy when one of two parties is a giant criminal conspiracy.

So does Sondland develop amnesia, perjure himself or start singing like a canary?

Volker helped both sides and made both sides squirm.

Morrison is smart but looks like a grade-A dick.

But Schiff got what he needed from both and used what he got in that closing.

Sondland's opening statement. ... He's about to say. ... yes, it was a quid pro quo. And EVERYONE was in on it.

Just wait until Rudy comes into the hearing room with Sondland’s brother straight from Sicily.
