Looking at USC football hires, there has never been an "obvious" upgrade hired at the jump. Pete Carroll was seen as "settling." And what made the hire unusual in another sense - it was the only hire (except for Larry Smith) in the last 50 years without any previous tie to the program. Actually closer to 100 years.

The madder Jerry Jones gets, the less likely Meyer is to express interest in another college job.

I have no knowledge of Rutgers, but I've got to believe that this is a calculated plant with the intent of getting the AD whacked. That's the domino that makes the Schiano return plausible. If the two sides broke off talks that had gotten acerbic, there's no way those two can work together, right? Schiano only comes home if he gets to pick his boss.

    Very Mob-like.

Rutgers has been a revolving door for ADs.

Gabe D with PowerMizzou reporting Barry Odom is out.

So Mizzou already has the second-lowest football budget in the SEC, is losing about $10 million due to the NCAA sanctions, has scholarship and recruiting limits, and now needs to buy out Odom and his staff.

Maybe the right decision, but the timing is horrible.

Saw it on the ESPN ticker too.

Will Healy at Charlotte is going to get a big-time job soon.

Will they be able to claim they can whack him for cause because of the NCAA violations?

    Um, no.

They whacked him because something went wrong in the locker room over the last half of the season, IMO. It was just a different team over the 5-game losing streak than it had been at any point the previous 4 seasons.

Violations didn’t happen under Odom’s watch.

Glad he’s gone. I have no illusions that Mizzou will ever be a consistent SEC or national power, but Odom certainly wasn’t the one to take them closer to the best Pinkel years.

Sterk is on the clock to make the right hire, one who can recruit, delegate and make in-game adjustments. Odom was piss poor in pretty much all of those areas.

Odom was incredibly incompetent in-game. Good DC. Not a general.

Pinkel was bad at halftime adjustments, but Odom was brutal at halftime or in-game changes.
