At least two AP sports writers laid off today

    We'll keep seeing things like this happen, of course, but I keep wondering about some of the below-the-radar (not FBC or BKC) things AP does in each state, such as the high school polls and events like the Iowa Relays. Who picks up the ball on those weeks the PGA Tour or NASCAR comes to town and Ferguson or Jenna Fryer need a week off? Usually the local writer has filled in.

    I'd have to think the stringer pool for the AP is very deep and unfortunately getting deeper all the time. Unless the pay is horrendous, there surely would be multiple suitors for, say, the Quad Cities tour stop or a Cup race in Pocono.

    Depends on the location ... some of the big cities, yeah; other places, not so much (and they have to scrape the bottom of the barrel sometimes) ...

    Texas AP has already outsourced its high school football poll to Dave Campbell's Texas Football.
