That's not the comparison though. I understand what you're saying, that the countries foreign policy and defense goals should be by design, not the whim of one man. The situation is more like Pence or the JCS Chairman or the DCIA were assassinated by a foreign power whose leader publicly took credit for the killing. That's much more inflammatory. I've seen arguments that killing a leader in this way in the absence of a state of war qualifies as a war crime, and indeed, it may.

I think it goes back a millennia or two longer than that, @Neutral Corner . The place is behind repair. These are religious zealots. You can't help but offend someone at every turn. Bin Laden was our ally, then got butt hurt bc we used Saudi Arabia as a staging area against Iraq. Their logic is not our logic. We have to attack at certain times, though, because these assholes had not only attacked our embassy, they were plotting to do worse -- and with little concern that we'd do shit. Well, we did shit -- and then some.

I don't like Trump, but I think it's a fool's errand to think he struck at these guys because of the impeachment imbroglio. He struck at them because they stuck it in our eye.

Does it matter why he did something so stupid? Go stand under a tree and chuck a rock through a hornet's nest and see what happens. Besides, I can't help but think that Wag the Dog was considered at least a side benefit even if it wasn't the prime motivation.

My biggest concern is the response of the Iraqi government.

If they expel the U.S. from their country, Bush's Iraq adventure looks even worse in retrospect, having resulted in nothing but creating a stronger bond between Iraq and Iran.

True, of course. I was talking in modern geopolitical terms, not about the long history, obviously. Trump is incurious and uninterested in considering the consequences of his actions, and no one can get him to stop and listen to a briefing from anyone who understands them. Triply true if the briefer is female.

On the plus side, this could keep Pompeo out of the senate.

It'll make a good tag team match, Iraq and Iran v. U.S. and Israel.

I think we know who wins that match but Hossein Khosrow Ali Vaziri would get some good face time.

That's a lot of our blood and treasure expended to make allies of two countries who expended the lives of half a million soldiers warring on each other in the 1980's. For perspective, that's ten times the number of deaths that the U.S. forces suffered in Vietnam.

US foreign policy is the whim of trump. Nothing else. He’s flailed and failed on North Korea, Syria, Iran, Iraq, Yemen .... He’s failed to maintain any allies. He’s do My Saudi terrorists bidding. Let Iran and Iraq do what they want. Not our problem.
He and the conservatives are too ignorant to understand that they are using Grant’s peninsula strategy with the Chinese. OrangeJesus has decided he’s willing to wipeout family farms in America to get China to do something they don’t want to do. OrangeJesus doesn’t know what he wants China to do, but if they don’t want to do it, then He wins.
OrangeJesus has no plan other than shit-n-tweet and have the secret service bring MILF whores to Florida for mutual masturbation sessions

People who aren't fucking idiots (which of course leaves Fatfuck out) understand very well why war is not supposed to be fought on a personal basis.

Perhaps he should have put down his 23rd Big Mac of the evening to ponder the fact he's now given an entire nation, and every nutcase affiliated with it, a blazing hot motivation to kill...

Cool, Fatfuck can now be indicted at The Hague on his own power, not only as an ex post facto accessory to Gallagher's war crimes.
