Marvin Lewis probably has no interest in coaching again, but for a nice check, a trip to the city, some show tickets and dinner he’ll interview.

Yes, there are. But the same was true of Matt Patricia, who is a terrible head coach.

The Patriots WRs the past few years have been regarded as awful, which makes the hiring decision even more confusing. The Giants somehow landed on one of the few choices that their fan base would like less than Jason Garrett.

Carolina will be interesting. That defense is getting long in the tooth. Offense is young, but the QB of the long-term future isn't there.

If there's one thing working in Rhule's favor: The NFC will be flushed of three Hall of Fame QBs - Brees, Rodgers, Ryan (marginal HOF case) - within 3 years. Once they hit the bricks, what's left...yeah, it's not pretty after Russ. The elite QBs will reside in the AFC. (Burrow will be added to that soon enough.)

You’re not a receivers coach to be head coach just to coach the receivers. Can he hire good coordinators and positions coaches? Can he manage the clock and in game situations? Can he run a locker room and training camp? The best bosses aren’t those that can do your job best but are those that allow you to do your best work.

Rhule said at one point that QB stability was one of his prerequisites for an NFL gig. Guess he changed his mind.

Good point. The Giants have serious issues all over that roster, but they definitely have the better quarterback situation long term.

I don't know that I agree with this. I might be more inclined to roll the dice on Cam Newton's health for a year and then take my chances than to have a mandate that I have to win with Daniel Jones.

I think you are underestimating Jones. He was inconsistent, but showed flashes of being a very good quarterback this year. Remember that he was playing behind a terrible offensive line and throwing to a weak group of receivers. Carolina may be better off if you were looking at just 2020, but beyond that I feel a lot better about Jones. He's no sure thing, but I think he is a better bet long term than anybody the Panthers have right now.

That high from his first few games sure wore off quick. I don't know if he's a bust, but he also didn't show enough in year one for me to think, "Oh yeah, they're allllll set now."

It's ... interesting that a franchise in the Carolinas got what it wanted and a New York franchise was left holding the bag.

And I love it ... almost as much as I like David Tepper not messing around by hiring Matt Rhule.

Word has it that the deal is seven years and $60 million. Checks a lot of the correct boxes.

Tepper HAD to do this, given the timing of the Ron Rivera firing and the team basically responding by laying turds at the end of the season. He had to deliver.

    IMO, he did.

    Defense long in the tooth?

James Bradberry, Shaq Thompson and Kawann Short aren't exactly ready to collect Social Security checks. Brian Burns flashed a lot of potential, when healthy, during his rookie season.

Luke Kuechly isn't exactly ready for a rocking chair, either. Eric Reid isn't too old. Yet.

The core players of the defense isn't exactly done yet. Not by a long shot. The run defense was absolute crap and the defensive line did Kuechly zero favors with lousy gap control, but that can be solved with a little coaching and a little give-a-crap.

Also ... what will become of Cam Newton? Will he be healthy enough to go again by camp? If so, how does Rhule utilize him? Agree on the HOF QBs, but that's a way of life in the NFC South. Imagine that poor Tampa Bay has seen Brees, Ryan and - until this past season - Newton for six of its 16 matchups while Jameis Winston plays a different type of ball giveaway program than Newton has promoted following touchdowns in Charlotte.
