The Saints have been truly blessed to have dynamite defenses and dynamite offenses within the span of a few generations.

Bum Phillips came close. Brought in the last decent plays of Kenny Stabler and Earl Campbell. Had a young Rickey Jackson on defense. But couldn't quite pull it off.

Then Jim Mora arrived after you-know-who tried first to get the USFL to go head-to-head with the NFL, then tried to circumvent the initial owner fees by getting the NFL to take his team. Improved the offense quite a bit and overhauled the defense. Brought in a sawed-off linebacker who played pretty well for him with the Stars.

The Dome Patrol took off. Imagine if the offense hadn't been stuck in mud more often. That defense could stand up to playoff pressure. But Eric Martin had a talent for catching the tough and off-target passes and dropping the ones Bobby Hebert put right in the breadbasket. Struggled with consistent production in the offensive backfield. A true shame.

I agree. People would laugh but the Stars were a very well-run organization. A lot better than a good chunk of NFL franchises then.

Maybe, but I was hoping Dalton Hilliard could have been the guy. For a season or two, he was tearing it up.

The Stars - certainly NOT the Generals - were the only consistently well-run organization during the USFL's three seasons. And yes, a freaking sight better than a few NFL franchises. Including the Saints ... until Tom Benson bought them from horrid ownership. The Buccaneers were in the cheap, miserable hands of Hugh Culverhouse. The Colts and the Irsays ... self-explanatory. To stay a step ahead of Starman ... Lions were still being (mis)run by the Fords. And on and on and on ...

Deuce McAllister in the fourth slot?

I'd take either Roaf or Morten ahead of McAllister. But the argument can be legitimately made.

Colston put up better numbers than Horn.
