Maybe it wasn’t someone in the media, but just a memorabilia vulture who pretended like he was.

Perhaps the most unenforced crime in media is how many people get credentialed who don’t produce any tangible work.

Double Down is absolutely correct. Every beat has a handful of guys who just hang out, talk to players in clubhouse/locker room, never write or post audio clips. Once you have a credential, if you're not actively breaking rules, really hard to lose a credential.

Often because an organization's president or other higher-up uses media passes to take care of people. When I worked in PR at a racetrack, the credentials manager would take a close look at the media list every year and trim where he could, but the politics of kicking off some guy who wasn't producing anymore yet had been coming for decades just wasn't always worth the trouble. Because if a credential was denied, that guy would call the track president or whoever else he knew in power, and that higher-up would shoo him away by calling the credentials guy and saying "just take care of him."

The credentials guy did have one good recourse -- parking spaces. Give the hangers-on a space that's two counties over and see if they still make the effort to show up.

And then one of those bastards would park in my assigned space. Except for the time it was Donnie Allison at Talladega.
