Just like every high school all-star game I've ever covered.

 

Usually the cutoff is 9 points, I think. It was first tried in the 1970s.

That rule does aid last-minute comebacks to some minimal extent, but it creates no options for anybody-- there is no decision to make.

Plus it does nothing to reduce or eliminate the allegedly critically dangerous kickoff play.

 

That would have to be a litmus test to determine which coaches were betting on games.

 

The success rate has gone from 1 in 5 to 1 in 10 (and probably lower than that when teams are expecting it). The 4th and 15 rate of conversion is about 20 percent.

 

1/5 is a decent rate for "onside" conversion; it's still a long shot but not a complete fluke or aberration.

You don't want to make last second comebacks too easy: a team leading after 59:45 SHOULD win the large majority of the time. But you want it within the range of the possible.

 

Let's erase one of the most exciting plays in football - just because.

Mostly you want viewers to think there is still a chance.

 

Underpinning all this is the presumption that injury rates and severity on kickoffs are dramatically higher than scrimmage plays.

It sounds like it should be true: players get running starts of 30-40 yards before colliding on kickoffs -- but I've never seen a story that attempts to present any real data on the question.
