When I get time later today I'll jump it to the RNRHOF thread, where it belongs, but you could argue INXS is one of the most egregious current snubs -- not even nominated, I don't think.

Kobe and Roberto Clemente were worldwide icons. Their deaths can't be compared to Earnhardt on a global scale.
The only thing that puts Earnhardt remotely on their level for shock is it happened in competition.

    Popovich being Popovich.
"Good game. Tough loss. Who cares." and then went on for a minute or so about Kobe.

Only celebrity death that really bummed me out was Prince.

The deaths that had the most impact on me was Sandy Hook. Left work a complete mess, picked up my daughter and went walking and window shopping.

Remember where I was for Elvis, Princes Di, 9-11. Was shocked but did not feel impacted emotionally.

My daughter's former morning care teacher was best friends with Vicky Soto, the Sandy Hook teacher who hid her students and was killed by Adam Lanza. Each year on the anniversary of the event, this woman and other friends and family of Vicky Soto go to the cemetery and have a picnic/party by the grave. At first it struck me as odd, but I've come around to appreciate the gesture, the refusal to remember her as the person who was murdered and to instead celebrate her life in a way that's reflective of how she lived. I didn't know her, but from all accounts she was a really good one.

Marshall Football plane crash, Wichita State Univ football crash , 6 weeks before Marshall, killed the coach and 14 players. No movie.

It's not a competition. There's horror and incomprehensible tragedies abound. No one's death is worse than any other. That some resonate and other's don't is a function of fame and popularity. Read the obits in every paper, everyday and behind each one is unmaskable grief and pain and suffering. tens of thousands of parents lose their child every year.
John and Keri Altobelli and their daughter Alyssa were killed in this crash. They left 2 children behind. I can't stop weeping over that.

It's horrible. The Bryant family is devastated. Untimely death, wherever and however it occurs is beyond awful. But can we mourn and remember without comparing and contrasting?
