This is not coaching related (directly anyway, although any HC would think the loss of a $35m naming rights deal was), but this is the only active NCAA Football thread, so I'm going to chuck it in here. If I were a UCF fan, I'd be pissed. If I were Danny White I'd be apoplectic, considering hiring hit men and leg breakers, and outright hiring PR people and lobbyists. The lege would never have dared if it had been the Gators or the 'Noles deal.

Standard coaching-search denial for Tucker, whose name popped into the stories Wednesday and Thursday:

Michigan State football head coaching target Mel Tucker says he's staying at Colorado

It is kinda unusual that Tucker would acknowledge that he was under consideration. Usually if you're not looking to leave, you either deny you've been contacted, officially or unofficially, in connection with the search, or feign complete ignorance.

Also to be noted, Tucker served as a grad ass 20+ years ago under Dantonio and Saban.

Tucker also is the obligatory minority
    Fickell reportedly is interviewing today

Definitely no obligatory minority rules in CFB coaching hires.

Yeah, but you may have heard mutterings that Joel Ferguson, the board of trustees honcho who served as George Perles's main patron saint during much or all of his 40-year tenure with the university, wants MSU
to interview -- hold onto your shorts now -- Marvin Lewis for the opening.

Incidentally Ferguson was supposedly hell bent to get Lewis named MSU head coach in 2002 when John L. Smith got the job. (Lewis was probably the hottest NFL assistant of the moment and probably would have had multiple NFL head coaching offers, so the idea of him taking the Sparty job was a pipe dream anyway. Maybe now it's not.)

Would have to be Crean. Stan Heath has stumbled in multiple spots.

Brian Gregory never could get it going with Georgia Tech and had plenty of time to do so. Curious to see if he fares better in Tampa with South Florida.

Now what? Assistants off Franklin's staff? JayPa? Sandusky on work release?

Just a guess: They'll start blocking the FAA tail number from now on.

Fickell tells Sparty to shove off.

Luke Fickell isn't leaving Cincinnati football for Michigan State

Supposedly Sparty is running into budget constraints because of Dantonio's payout and the costs of fighting/settling sexual assault cases (including but not only Larry Nassar). Prospective coaches are shying away because their budget for assistant coaches is likely to be crimped.

It appears now Dantonio's protege Tressel will probably get the job by default.

Seems like MSU's best play would be to elevate an assistant as an interim at this point.

The problem with that is that the downturn in Dantonio's program has been largely attributed to his unwillingness/inability to make changes and upgrade the staff; there's been almost no personnel changes the last three or four seasons, none of the assistants are moving out for HC jobs, so basically it's become a bunch of tired old guys doing the same old jobs they've been doing for years.

Dantonio did try to shake things up a year ago, but only by shuffling a bunch of guys around to different positions on the staff, which raises the question of whether you had them in the right slots to begin with.
