Island Express helicopters never flew again after that Sunday.

Our family was approached about filing a lawsuit against the maker of the plane in my family's death, with them arguing my brother-in-law had a false sense of security because the plane, a Cirrus SR22, was equipped with a parachute. And the lawyers argued to us that there have been several Cirrus SR22 crashes over the years and they felt an argument could be made linking their marketing as the safest aircraft out there because of the parachute. We opted against filing a lawsuit.

That's noble of you – truly it is; however, I think most of us, should we tragically be placed in Vanessa's situation, would sue the company since a safe arrival at your destination is what you are paying them for.

It's a different circumstance because the pilot in Kobe's crash was an employee of the company and had been previously cited for flying in poor weather. Most likely should have known better. The pilot in my family's crash was my brother-in-law. We probably could have had a case, but a lot of it would have involved my parents as the plaintiffs and them probably testifying against my brother-in-law. They wanted no part of that.

Are they doing a GoFundMe for Vanessa at the Staples Center memorial today?

Kimmel did make a pitch for Kobe's sports foundation. Yikes indeed.

Yeah, the paying for tickets to attend this event has a weird, icky feeling.

The skeptic in me thinks the charging for tickets and holding the ceremony on a Monday morning at Staples Center was to have more control over who would attend.

The crowd would have been way different -- and massive -- for a free event on a Saturday in a venue like the LA Coliseum.

I liked Kobe well enough without ever feeling any impulse to fanboi. I'm pretty much ready to say a prayer over the flowers on his grave and move on from this story.

I think they chose Monday because of the date 2/24 and Staples Center because it’s where Kobe played, but I think there’s some validity to what you’re saying.
