Have you ever been to one of these things? We're talking 100k geeks and nerds in a convention center. They'll have Q&A's with guests the size of Mark Ruffalo, which means that there will be several thousand people in an auditorium set up, rows and rows of chairs six inches apart. The food court will be belly to back with people in line to get food. There will be lines for the next event in a given area, ready to file in when the session before ends. It is *extremely* typical to come home from a big con like this what what is known as "con crud", which comes from holding the hand rail of an escalator that twenty thousand people have held today or just from breathing. Walk into a rest room and literally thousands of people have been there that day.

There is a ton of involuntary contact and the loss of personal space in an extremely crowded environment. We won't even talk about how crowded the elevators are. People get sick when there *isn't* an extremely contagious virus.

It occurs to me that you may have been cracking on the chances any those geeky guys have of actually touching a woman. If so, remember that we're now living in a Star Wars/Star Trek/Harry Potter/MCU kinda world. There are tons of geek girls at these things. Some look really good in spandex cosplay, and some don't, but they're there, getting drunk and looking to get laid too.

If as many people got this as the common flu, do you know how many would die?

One million people get the flu, 140 people die.

One million people get this, 10,000 people die.

    Does that account for age?

How many screaming, mostly young fans at an NCAA tournament game fit the profile of the people who are actually dying from this thing?

You are confusing television shots with actual in-arena experience. It takes quite a few bucks to buy NCAA tickets and more to travel to a game site if you are, say, a San Diego St. fan and their opening regional is in Buffalo (or vice versa). Most tickets bought in advance are by locals, the kind of well-heeled locals who skew a lot older than college students.

No, but do you want to give it to Grandma when you visit them?

Cool. Then I encourage you to go join every large social gathering possible, since there's nothing to worry about.

We're watching as this thing hospitalizes thousands of people world wide, continues to grow, and there are more dead every day. It may be just like the flu to you, but there are a lot of vulnerable people among the population it could easily be a death sentence for. Screw it, why bother taking precautions, right?

Is that where we are as a society? "Hey, as long as you don't flatline...why not go to a sporting event and get sick and go to work anyway and spread it around to at-risk populations because, Duke!"
