Or by the ones who translated them later. Or the next round of translators. Or the next.

It's why our Jesus looks white. He almost certainly wasn't.

So it is god who is so insecure and vain that living a great life of service and dedication to his fellow man takes a back seat to a sociopathic murderer who utters the magic words at the last minutes. Sounds like trump is god, petty, vindictive and egomaniacal. Sounds like the priests of the temple or the priests of the church are looking for a devoted following of tithes so they don’t have to work.

but whatever works for you is great. And whatever works for me is equally great. My beliefs are right, correct and Infallible, as I suspect you believe yours are. Absent proof, let’s just stick to our own, and shut up about it.

I remember when I was a kid, the priest at our church pointed out that Jesus was a Jew, and that the odds were very strong that he was short, swarthy, with dark curly hair and a hooked nose. He said that the chestnut-haired, blue-eyed handsome Jesus who hung on people's walls had no basis in reality, and was a product of our prejudices.

The congregation didn't take that well. It made perfect sense to me.

It’s the religion thread. It’s the one place where you *would* talk about it.

It’s a religion thread, either I’m right and so are you, or one of us will be killed. That’s the history of religious discussions isn’t it?

If they did, though, they did it in a pretty unappealing way. They made up a Jesus that’s only sort of nice, and often not “nice” at all. Simultaneously, they made a Jesus who says love thy enemy and be like a Good Samaritan.

I mean, they created one hell of a complex dude.

I dunno. Do you believe in a God that’s gonna kill me?

    He absolutely wasn’t.

It should be noted they failed miserably at the manipulation part, given their general unpleasant ends. Unless they were motivated to get themselves killed hundreds of years before the religion actually became popular.

Let's go with the assumption that he is real. Honestly, my theory has always been that though he wasn't really the divine savior, the stories were based on a real person. So they took that person and then twisted his words on a few things to help manipulate followers into doing things they way they wanted them done.
