I thought that was still 12 years away.

As a practical matter, the US can't shut down at the scale it's attempting to do now for more than three months. The economy would collapse to like Mad Max levels. So the hope is that in this shutdown, testing will expand to the point the shutdowns can be more locally targeted, and/or more efficient means of isolating at-risk or sick individuals can be created.

Don’t be a voice of reason. We are ramping up for full panic mode.

We are going to try and fight it and fight it, but at some point people just might say “fuck it” and we need to go back to living our lives. I’m guessing after eight weeks, that’s what we do.

In Goldman Sachs' emergency conference call Sunday, they were telling clients that 50 percent of Americans are going to get this virus (with 80 percent experiencing what feels like a mild cold, 15 percent getting hit with what feels like a more serious flu and 5 percent having something more serious, and of those it will be largely elderly people). I have no idea if their projections are going to prove accurate. They think based on the evidence, that it is going to be seasonal like the cold and flu. They think the US quarantine attempt is going to be ineffective in preventing half the population from getting it, and result in significant economic damage, but it will slow the rate of transmission and give the health care system more time to deal with the case load. I think this is going to pretty be tough for people, and there is going to be significant economic fallout, but I'd guess that we are not going to become a "Mad Max" movie.

The southern 500 is a local delicacy.

Goldman Sachs is much more likely to be right than the doomsday scenario is. I just cited the latter to show how the current shutdown isn't capable of being extended too long. Also, of course, our knowledge of how this disease operates will increase dramatically as it spreads, which will result in both different forecasts and different public health measures.

Glenn Kirschner, a pretty smart guy, is talking about "some level of negligent homicide or voluntary/involuntary manslaughter" for Fatty regarding his handling of this crisis.

So we don't even have an official case here yet, but the city is pretty much shut down (which is good). But I'm convinced some mom-and-pop shops won't be able to reopen when (if?) this pandemic ends. I've gone and bought gift cards from a few of them, but what else can we do to support them?

Being in Indy and knowing the folks that run the 500, I think they'd be fine with diehard fans and community support for a rescheduled race. Forget people coming from across the country and probably forget the Snake Pit in the infield with 20,000 drunk college kids (you don't want to know the viruses in there, on a good year). But there were stories here yesterday about how small IndyCar teams may fold without the race this year and that the the track would take a mid-eight figures hit. So I think if people are allowed out of their houses by late summer, there's gonna be a race by the fall.

The Southern 500 is far from a local delicacy. It's NASCAR's oldest super speedway race and probably the second biggest crown jewel after the Daytona 500. Even with dwindling numbers, NASCAR is still the most popular motorsport in the country. Maybe that's like being the tallest guy in a room full of midgets, but running the two races direct opposite would severely harm both. There probably isn't much crossover in ticket buyers; there certainly is in terms of TV viewership. Indy/Charlotte works on Memorial Day because fans can watch the end of one and switch over to the other. For a true race fan, that's a golden day when you add in Monaco.
