A local friend was frantic last night. Her employer is not letting her work from home, even though there is no reason not to. We looked online for stuff. Lysol spray at Amazon was 110.99. One can, no bigger than the cans you'd find at your local store, was over a hundred dollars. I reported the seller, as many others probably did. It's down to five and change today.

@DanielSimpsonDay's Ron Swanson meme is not how I want to be, but...throwing up my hands here. People need to exercise some compassion.

We got word we are tentatively returning to the office on March 30. Schools here are out until at least April 17. I guess if we stay holed up until March 30, it would be safe to take the kid to grandma's?

Speaking of which, if you know someone who sews, there are a lot of posts out there with directions on making your own cloth face masks. That sounds kind of crazy, but they are made with a pocket inside for a replaceable filter. You can buy one of the high end furnace filters that filter down to very small particles at Walmart or Home Depot. I know that 3M makes them and I'm sure other brands do too. Buy a big one for $20 or so, clip the wires, and take out the sheet of filter medium inside. Cut it to shape to fit the mask pocket and you're good to go. This isn't something that there have been big runs on, so you should be able to get the filters pretty readily still.

Masks on the low end do more to prevent spreading it than to protect you, but having some of these when the other types of masks are unavailable is far better than nothing at all.

Maybe. Who knows for certain? Assess things on the 28th or so?

Thanks. She's young and a trained medical person, so I'm sure she'll be fine.

Best wishes and good luck to you both. Young and healthy or not, she's working at ground zero. I know how that feels.

This thing is getting a lot of traction. It says it's too soon to know what the deal is. Therefore, this guy claims, it's a mistake to undertake drastic measures. Here's what gives me pause:
    1) It seems he'd rather us wait and see what the mortality rate is going to be before we do anything bold.
    2) He is one of the few -- if not the only -- expert who feels this way. I am reminded that 3% of scientists think global warming is a hoax. The other 97% say it's real.
    3) He is a professional skeptic and contrarian. His best known work is entitled Why Most Published Research Findings Are False.
    4) He was reportedly under consideration to be Trump's NIH chief.

#4 means I flush his opinion, sight unseen.

There are times to roll the dice and times for erring on the side of caution. If he wants to roll the dice with his own life, fine. Giving bad advice to the public as a whole? Screw that guy.

We have very limited data, and less solid data than that. It is far too early to have an opinion other than "Do all you can to be safe".

Andrew Cuomo is doing a civil, friendly and intelligent 30-minute interview on Sean Hannity's radio show right now. We've crossed the Rubicon, folks.

If I could touch one with the other, I probably wouldn't miss my hands.
