Just listen to his press conferences. He is giving himself plenty of credit. His minions are doing it, too.

The reason is there's no point of reference. The reason is a deadly virus in which many carriers are asymptomatic. The reason is self-denial for preservation of businesses or finances. The reason is fear of all the uncertainty ("If they shut us down, when will they ever open up again?").

The reason is . . . human nature.

CIDRAP is an excellent source on this.

That's more than half the number of U.S. soldiers killed in the Viet Nam war.

I've tried not to play this card a ton, especially with the doubters, but I just got off the phone with my wife and feel like venting, sharing, whatever. I've said it before, but my wife is a physician. She is not on the front lines. She knows plenty of doctors and nurses who are. We're in Northern Colorado. She says everything she's heard is that it's just a shit show, even here, and that hospitals are close to capacity as it is (Fort Collins and Greeley as specific examples). She says these numbers are way low, which I know we know, but she said even many hospitalizations aren't getting tested at this point. She's said more than once and others have told her that media, as much as many want to say have caused the panic, actually are underreporting just how bad it is already. It scares me knowing what we know just second hand. I can only imagine those who have to deal with it all hands on deck.

Of course it's underreported and the numbers are low. We're probably in a two-week lag here. Denver Health has been sounding the alarm for a week. We really don't have the tests to get a firm grasp on this.

Only super-isolated San Miguel County is trying to test everyone, but only because a couple's company donated their blood tests.

Everyone has been talking about flattening the curve. But that means everyone buys into the means to do that.

    It ain't happening.

Meanwhile, I just got an Amber Alert-sounding alert on my phone about the stay-at-home order for Denver. As I walked to the park again (allowed under the hollow order), lots of people out running and sunning themselves like it's the Fourth of July.

That's a big assumption over that long a period. According to the Rule of 72, you need a continuous 24 percent gain to achieve doubling every three days.

We're around that now (22% today), but other hotspots are dropping. Italy had an 8% gain today, Spain and France 12%. When our numbers start dropping is the key to whether such 3.2 million projections happen in such a short amount of time.
