It's not that they closed or laid off employees, criticism should come from how it was handled. If, indeed, people were laid off via email, that's bullshit.

My district laid off most of our part timers so they can apply for unemployment and our general manager called each one individually. We're nowhere near the numbers of HL, but at least they could have shown some human decency, especially since they purport to be a Christian business.
