    That doesn’t explain, though, why mainstream media covered the sexual assault allegation against Brett Kavanaugh, which was also decades old and could never possibly be verified. Is there a difference?

    It’s true that nothing may be forthcoming on this from WaPo, NYT, CNN, etc. I agree that they should proceed with extreme caution when discussing unverified sexual assault claims, but the idea of mainstream media ignoring them completely would seem to be a new precedent.
