I stopped trying to make sense of specific people being laid off a long time ago. Ballard is exceptional, but many others of his ilk have been cast aside before and, sadly, more will come. The good thing for people like him is that they usually land in a better spot.

Journalism really is like pro sports, particularly the NFL, where better players are shown the door because the team can live with a lesser player for a lesser price.

That's pretty darn egregious. That's not an oversight, either, like "I forgot to add a link and attribution." That's someone who doesn't even know he's supposed to add attribution.

The better players in the NFL usually go to another team that will pay them what they want.

I think they deleted the whole Mets Maven section off the site. The other team links work just fine

the latest layoffs? maven has shown its hand. looks like all that talk about making the mag the expensive, talent-laden showpony atop a mountain of scuffling bloggers is garbage. they could've furloughed plenty of those team beat reporters until, well, there were teams and beats to cover again. Ballard's the most obvious signal, but the losses of two other talented writers, plus editors Sarah Kwak and Jack Dickey and the most meticulous fact-checker in the building hammer home the fact that the model was always more about scufflers than showpony.

it's no shock, given the state of the industry. but it's a lesson, once again. the words we love are cheap. when it comes to Heckman or anyone else: forget what they say. watch what they do.
