Sounds like they are following Walmart's new policy.

Maybe some grocery stores truly are overrun with people sometimes. But just not the ones I go to (when I go to them, anyway).

Mine hasn't been bad, but I always go right when they open for people under 60. (There is still an hour before that which his only for people 60 and older.) Maybe it gets worse later in the day, but I doubt it.

Realistically, how much do you think a journalist making 50-60k a year over a career of 30 plus years have saved given the fact that he probably has been laid off at least once?

How much would a factory worker have made given that he also probably would have gone through at least one factory closing?

And given the cost of American medicine if you or your family suffer a serious illness would owing an extra 5k on a credit card made much difference? In 1985 I was responsible for a self-insured employee health plan of 300 employees and dependents. One of our employees had premature twins and the cost of care, even then, was $250,000, even then. How many of us could survive a hit like that?

And remember, the people who do not have insurance frequently don't because of financial misfortune such as losing a job and being unable to pay the COBRA charges.

I just turned 59 last month. I have enough saved (not counting 401(k)) to get me to early retirement (62) if absolutely necessary. I understand that may not be realistic for everyone. But the Dave Ramsey guideline --- six months emergency fund---is very realistic. So much is possible if you 1) start early and 2) make it a priority to prepare for the worst. It sure isn't always fun, but the peace of mind it generates makes up for a lot of the lack of fun.

Everyone on here is pretty much on board with the "gotta have health insurance no matter what" idea. Good for them. They should be every bit as on board with the "gotta have six months emergency fund, no matter what" idea.

I socked away more than six months and it's obviously come in handy after getting laid off four months ago. Some was saving, but also not going on a massive spending spree on inheritance money.

The thing about emergency funds is that emergencies happen, and when they're over it's very hard to build up that reserve again.

Where does this journalist live? In a major metro? Probably not. But when I was making $25,000 in BFE, I was able to save enough for a down payment on a house and the mortgage.

People seem to be getting smarter about the grocery thing here ... A couple of Saturdays ago it was super packed at a Kroger that I usually don't frequent but chose because it was a little bit away from downtown. The Publix I went to on Tuesday was much less crowded and I only had one instance where I had to go down a different aisle to avoid people.

May need to make a supplemental bee double e double r u n beer run today, but I know exactly how to get in and out quickly for that. No need to linger.
