Naw. That thought is absolutely appropriate during a time of furloughs and firings. That is a nonsense take.

Good for Wahl. More writers need to speak out when wronged. These companies are the scum of the earth. I applaud you Mr. Wahl for calling them out.

Bullshit. The guy even said he'd take the cut during the pandemic but don't try to make it permanent.

The "OMG he MAKES MORE THAN ME!!" take is exactly what the Maven douchebag is going for. It's garbage.

As an aside, the Mets team site has still not returned and the writer in question apparently has been fired, because all his Twitter now says is sportswriter in his bio

Obviously, he had an employment agreement which guaranteed that his base salary would not be cut without his consent (or they would have just done it). If you are going to give up some of your pay, you definitely should have an end date as to the reduction, and it is a little sleazy of them to permanently cut his pay if the intent be that it is only temporary.

And he probably also had some sort of severance built into the agreement if he was terminated for reasons other than cause. So my guess is that they are trying to shoehorn his public complaining into a cause event so they don’t have to pay contractual severance (and probably why he deleted the tweet after his lawyer or a smart friend told him to do so).

  6. I honestly can't believe there are some of you out there saying, yeah, Grant had it coming.

    That's such garbage.

Wahl was the best writer SI had left. Firing him is one thing. But then diminishing his work as basically worthless in an internal memo? That's both false and horrible.

    Had it coming? No.

But if he thought for a single second that he was going to keep his job after his reaction/thrashing of the bosses, then he is incredibly stupid.

He gave them gift wrapped cause for termination. It is shocking that he lasted as long as he did after that.

Much like the captain of the aircraft carrier, I'm sure Wahl knew what he was doing when he sent the tweet and was willing to go metaphorically die on that hill.

Ramrodding through permanent pay cuts by citing a pandemic is bullshit of the highest order. As the only name left at SI (that I can remember), he was saying what everybody else on staff was thinking.

You people eat yourselves in your industry. The bitterness at people making money is what makes it easier for the Corporates to do this shit to you guys.

While I may be jealous of someone making that much, it seems very slimy to say, "You make this much money, you should be fine to take less."

That's his business and his call to take less or not take less. Not my place to judge him either way.

I’m sure he has no regrets about sealing his fate. Like getting fired from McDonald’s for insubordination.

Then again, there are burger flippers making more money than the garbage Maven is paying whatever clowns they hire off the street

... Especially when the fuckwads that bought your magazine have been doing plenty to make it worse, even before the current situation.
