This was Trump’s time to shine. If he locks everything down and starts supplying hospitals in January he looks like genius right now while the world suffers and he coasts to a win this fall.

But he didn’t. Not even close.

He also would have been subjected to mass outrage and accusations of "Overreaction! Police state!" when a country is in lockdown with little obvious virus effect. Sorry, no Super Bowl. Yeah, that would have gone over wonderfully.

Short-term pain for long-term gain is HATED by this country. See President Carter's decision to hire Paul Volcker to tame inflation. Tons of short-term pain. Helped cost him the election. And Reagan got the credit for the rebound.

That's just human nature. And you know damn well nobody on this board would have praised a January lockdown decision. Just as you never would have praised a Patriot Act or tight airport security in August 2001. Who in January was calling for the NCAA Tournament or the Masters to be called off?

No one would have bitched about him preparing our hospitals.

Instead he blew this off for weeks.

    False choice.

    You don't start with lockdown.

You start by positioning resources and distributing good public information. You start by explaining what's coming, and what needs to be done to mitigate it.

You make a case to the public.

Who knew that Michigan --- Michigan! --- would have more cases and twice the deaths of California --- a port state with four times the population and a heavy Asian population? How the fuck do you prepare for that?

Also fact: you used this crisis to enrich yourself, in the way so-called right-wing "populists" decry.

    You prepare by preparing.
