Down here in Mississippi, the public school association finally canceled games this week when the governor closed schools for the rest of the year. The MHSAA's director said that was a big factor, but they were also looking at a host of others -- availability of venues, travel, expiring physicals, individual districts that have a no school/no play policy, etc.
Before that decision, though, he said they were going to wait until the last minute because -- and I agree with him on this -- it didn't hurt to hope for a best-case scenario. Why cancel everything in early April if it might improve significantly by May? What's the harm in waiting two more weeks? There will (and did) come a time when you have to realistically pull the rip cord, but there was no sense it doing it early.

Now the state's private school association STILL has not canceled, even though I think we've now reached the point of no return. So many schools have closed down for the year (and they have members in Louisiana, Arkansas and Tennessee as well) that our local ADs are even wondering what they're waiting for.

Sounds like Ohio's director. I'm sure he's being lauded for his leadership.

It's a waste of everyone's time and energy -- least of which the associations' -- to "hope for a best case scenario." There was two months worth of evidence from China by the time this showed up here to show it's wasn't going to be safe enough for sporting events in spring.

Checking in from Harrisonburg here. Pretty sure what you were looking at was just a Verizon coverage map.

The MHSAA was a little slow out of the gate. They didn't issue a statewide shutdown until so many individual districts had closed schools that there was no one fielding teams anyway. Teams were still playing as late as March 14. But, a couple of weeks in, the director was pretty honest about saying that if the governor closed schools, then they would have no choice but to cancel the season. He also said they had a drop dead date for when it was no longer feasible (he didn't specify it, but I assume it was May 1).
Like I said, though, until then his philosophy was basically to hope for the best but expect and prepare for the worst. He wasn't some wild-eyed optimist. He was just a guy who had his people drawing up contingency plans, just in case. It seemed like a pretty rational and logical approach given the situation here. Mississippi hasn't been slammed with cases quite the way Louisiana has.
I'm not sure he's being lauded for his leadership, but I don't think he's getting ripped either. I think they handled it about as well as anyone could, and most people seem to understand the situation and accept it.

I think right now it's been 50-50 for states canceling their spring sports, which is kinda hard to believe that there's a couple dozen still thinking they can play at some point.

How is everyone doing? I havent been around here at all lately, either to read or write. I was never a lurker; if i had an opinion, I’d share it, and for the most part people got my abrasive sense of humor and my penchant for putting his foot in his mouth to come off sexist and racist. That’s brass tacks.

But since this pandemic really hit in earnest, I have zero interest in opinion sharing. It rarely hits my radar anymore, and that sucks. I miss this place; i miss “the world.” I also think i need to go to rehab eventually; this life is not sustainable. I havent written or read for a month. Monster.
