My issue is that "We need a Manhattan Project-approach!" is just a crutch people use to convince themselves that anything can be solved quickly . . . IF WE JUST WORK AT IT!!! Marshaling resources to test 330 million people likely would be the most "involved" thing this country has ever done. That's like three presidential elections worth of human cooperation, to say nothing of organizing the personnel to conduct the testing . . . and to say nothing of making sure John Q. Trumpist and his family took the damn test. Remember, it takes 500K employees and six months just to conduct a census!

Why not a "Manhattan Project" . . . for a vaccine! Because I suspect one or more are under way. Doesn't mean a solution is around the corner.

 

I do believe in the private sector, when motivated, can get things done very quickly. I know people were saying 18 months for a vaccine, but I honestly think 12 months would be my guess.

What if China gets the vaccine first and does not share it?

 

That's easy. We'll get one eventually and claim we were first.
