Unfortunately, yes. It was, hands down, the worst movie I have ever watched.
I was on a bit of an indie movie kick at the time, saw the premise about a killer tire, and thought it might be a goofy fun horror movie. Which it could have been, if it wasn't in the hands of a douchebag French director who takes himself way too seriously. The opening scene, with the "No reason" speech was great. And then we got 23 minutes of an 82-minute movie -- not an exaggeration -- of a tire rolling through the desert; probably 10-15 minutes of nonsensical scenes; and another 15 minutes of Frenchy McDouche telling us we were stupid for thinking we should watch a movie and actually expect it to enjoy it.
God, I fucking hate that movie with the passion of a thousand burning suns.

Y'all need to learn when to turn a movie off. :)

But for every Rubber or Midsommar, there's a Black Dynamite. I was ready to give up on Black Dynamite about 30 minutes in, and then he shows up at the orphanage and meets the crack-addicted orphan and the movie takes off on a rocket sled to awesomeness.

I get that, but 23 minutes of just the tire rolling down the road?

When you watch a movie, you generally give it some time to set things up, right? So we're watching Rubber and the tire starts rolling through the desert for 5 minutes ... then 10 ... then it blows up a bird, OK, that was cool ... then 15 .... what the hell is this? ... then 20 ... so basically you're trying to give it a chance to get to the point, not knowing when it'll get there, and then it finally ends so you say, OK, we'll give it a chance ... and then you eventually get pissed off when you realize there was no point.
Knowing it was only 82 minutes, too, I reached a point around the 45-minute mark where I felt like I had invested too much time not to finish it, if that makes any sense. Like I had to see it through to the end at that point, for better or for worse.

I get it. I'm mostly teasing. I'm also glad I did some reading about the movie before even thinking about checking it out.

Wish I had done the same. But, like Midsommar, it actually got decent reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. I think it was at 68 percent, which is in line with the kind of "so bad it's good" movie I was hoping for and rather expecting.
My biggest problem with Rubber is the insulting attitude of the director. He actually appears in the movie and has a couple of scenes where he insults the audience for paying money to watch it. He's the stereotypical snooty European asshole, saying us Americans are stupid for wanting to be entertained by movies so here is one you cannot possibly be entertained by.
I want to find him and demand my $7.99 back. Or take it in trade, for whatever the exchange rate of nut kicks to dollars is.

Finally watched Manchester By The Sea Saturday night. Really well done. As depressing as I thought it would be. I'm glad I watched it, but that one will not be going into the rewatchables bin.

I've seen everything Ken Lonergan has done. Really enjoy his movies.

I was more in the WTF?? camp. Probably because of how bleak it was at the end.
