    Exhibit A against halfwit columnizing.

Population density won't save you. Or Bret Stephens.

Are there no cities in Tennessee? No meatpacking plants? No nursing homes? No Amazon distribution centers? No factories? No schools?

Dr. Mihaljevic acknowledges the necessity of the lockdowns to contain the virus, along with the urgent need for ramped-up testing and ongoing monitoring.

I'm getting so sick of contrarian opinions on this, especially when they get traction.

In a nation this big and populated, different places will have different plans.

If only there was like, one leader , to help coordinate these plans. That would be a great idea to try.

Both Batman's post that prompted this one, and this post, are excellent, and perfectly encapsulate the problem with this situation.

People most in favor of a the ideal solution of long-term social isolation and a national shutdown are, by and large, those that actually do only need to go out once every couple of weeks for groceries and such.

Most everyone else will not be able to successfully do this on a long-term, every-day basis. It just won't be done. Can anyone honestly see people in this country going to work, every day, wearing masks and gloves, and not getting within six feet of anybody, over a prolonged amount of time? And that's just speaking of those that actually still are going to work. Those that aren't are causing, and dealing with, a whole other set of problems that also will need to be solved. In short, those that could do this over very many months, or years, are only the ones who don't actually have to, either because they don't need to go out, or they can otherwise afford to not go to work.

Even at the cost of deaths, there is a limit to what people will do, or feel like they can tolerate doing -- especially if deaths are going to happen, anyway. People get fatalistic after awhile. They're tolerating all this right now because we are all hoping it is not going to go on for too long.

But what if it does? A no-end-in-sight scenario, simply put, will not end well, and will not be feasible, even if it means people dying.

There will come a point where people will say that to themselves, and take their chances, and just go about their business, anyway. I think that's the view of any actual protestors.

Perhaps. If the severity of the virus is seen as significantly diminished by the end of May, more people will object to the restrictions. If not, then not. As a PS, I believe officials will be reluctant to lift restrictions rather than eager because any subsequent increase in hospitalizations and deaths will be seen as their responsibility by many voters.
